Our Wildlife Garden contains a collection of native trees, herbaceous borders, a wild flower meadow and a display of sculptures. The gardens themselves are developed and designed by owner of Dutch house Sjaak Kastelijn, who is former manager of York Museum Gardens.
Set on a 1.6 acre plot with lovely views to the surrounding fields and the hilltop village of Crayke, the gardens also feature the river Foss which meanders through the site. Due to the gardens natural setting in a rural area and being so close to the river, it is a haven for wildlife and a feeding station for bees, insects and birds. The Dutch house provides cohesion between art and nature, and an educational opportunity for visitors to learn more about sustainable gardening and gardening to increase wildlife and biodiversity.
Enjoy a scenic 2.5 mile circular walk starting on our premises or get your kids engaged in wildlife through adventure trails in our garden. Click here to download the leaflet: CraykeWalkFC
This beautiful landscape offers a chance for visitors of all ages to find out more about sustainable gardening as well as enjoying the peaceful tone with the perfect backdrop of the Yorkshire countryside. The featured wildlife meadow area is seeded with native wildflower and creates a splash of colour throughout the summer. Moreover, the vegetable and scented areas to the plot offer raised beds which provide a good opportunity for our visitors to have a closer look within and experience how these plants form an important part of our lives. We aim to grow a good mixture of old and new vegetables which are fully utilised in our cafe alongside herbs from our herb border, some of which are Mediterranean in origin but all add to the culinary experience.
While you peruse the site, you can explore our specifically chosen greenery aimed at attracting bees and butterflies some of which include colourful herbaceous plants which show year-long interest. Visitors are also welcome to browse our ‘Plants Courtyard’ which offers a high quality selection of plants to enhance your garden at home.
